Genetic counselors help provide guidance to people at risk of passing on an inherited genetic disorder to their children. By providing relevant information you will help the parents to create a plan to help them prepare for the birth of their child. You (the genetic counselor) will prepare a report, fact sheet, or brochure to present to the parents you are counseling. You must explain all information pertinent to a genetic disorder detected in their child. The mother is pregnant and is not aware that the child has the disorder – your counseling session will be the first time the parents have heard that their child has a genetic disorder.
· How was your disease detected? (e.g. a karyotype test) 3 points
· What is the common name of the disorder the child has? Are there any other names for the disorder? (e.g. Down’s syndrome is also called Trisomy-21) 5 points
· Explain to the parents, using charts or diagrams, why (biologically) the disorder occurred. How would this have been inherited? 10 points
· Explain the effects of the child’s disorder to the parents. (Include things like life expectancy, expected mental and physical outcomes, etc…) 10 points
· What (if any) treatment options are available? How can they give their child the best life possible? 5 points
· Tell the parents about two medical or support groups that they could contact to receive further information about their child’s disease. 2 points
